In December 2005, I had completed composing all but the Editorial of
the online cultural journal "Jyoti" which was taking its new
incarnation in the house of SCIY. For five years or so, Jyoti had been
sporadically in operation, first as a quarterly, later as a bi-annual
and somtimes as an annual - depending on my time constraints. Apart
from my academic pursuits, I was serving also as the president of
the Sri Aurobindo Center of Los Angeles and 'Jyoti' was seen by
me as somewhat of an extended cultural mouthpiece of the community life
of that Center. It thus had sections on "news", "sales and exchanges"
and "projects" which were specific to the Center. However, its wider
interest areas were the "studies", "articles", "themes" and "creative"
sections which, though sometimes related to the Center's life, were
independent of it and took in contributors from the "extended family"
of Sri Aurobindo disciples.
Prior to 2005, Jyoti had surfaced last early in 2004, so I felt
some pressure to produce it by the end of 20065, to keep up at least the
annual schedule of the journal. However, the proper inspiration for an
"editorial" was lacking and I could not muster it - in spite of much
trying - before setting out for India with a number of friends to
travel and tour the art and spirituality sites of that country. This
trip, first to the Sri Aurobindo ashram for a couple of weeks and then
around India, was to occupy me completely until now, accompanied by
major and forced unfortunate life-changes in the background which have
brought me to this present point. In short, I am no longer connected
with the Sri Aurobindo Center of Los Angeles, having been "politically
ousted" by disgruntled elements. However, I continue to be the editor
of Jyoti.
Hence, I realized the occult wisdom in the failure to produce the
journal in 2005. It no longer has anything to do with the Sri Aurobindo
Center of Los Angeles and now stands as an independent cultural journal
of the entire Sri Aurobindo community. The first thing I needed to do
to reflect this change was to recategorize the journal. This I have
done by removing the Center-specific sections from it and grouping
these under the LA Center Live category. Then, I have shifted the
journal itself from its status as a branch of the LA Center Live under
the 'Communities" section to the 'Publications" area under "Culture". I
am in the process of writing the editorial at present and will annouce
the new incarnation of the journal soon.

Looking forward to seeing Jyoti in its new incarnation, Debashish. I'm new to it, (other than reading Rich's posts). It seems there is a broader brush at work on SCIY, one that encompasses the micro, but that has things to say at a macro level, so this is probably a more apt incarnation of the Journal. Perhaps there can be another place in communities for the individual activities of the various Sri Aurobindo centers, if you and Ron and Rich haven't created that already (I haven't yet explored that area). ~ K
