Kepler, some good points here. Thanks for saying this. I agree that name-calling on all sides ought to stop.
Basically my position is just that the opposition to Peter Heehs or to the biography could have been expressed using the tools of intellect and culture, instead of personal demonization, inciting a mass movement, calling for book-banning (in the whole of India -- not just the Ashram, even), starting a lawsuit and all the rest of it. The problem is not that people were put off but the way they expressed their feelings. The methods used were questionable.
To whatever extent people on the anti-Heehs side had a case, they killed their own case by taking measures like this. The lot of us at SCIY would likely be taking those perspectives much more seriously had they been expressed with dignity, transparency, honesty, balance and impartiality, in a manner befitting a spiritual community. The tragedy as I said earlier on SCIY is that true critiques of the biography have been lost in all this emotionalism.
